Energy

“Energy is the motor for sustainable development in Afghanistan”

Energy plays a crucial role in the improvement of people’s living standards. Providing a people with sources of energy paves the way for the establishment of a peaceful and developed society. GTD believes in the positive impact of renewable energy (RE) sources and is committed to promoting and developing eco-friendly, affordable and durable solutions to its beneficiaries.

Afghanistan has a vast potential of RE sources that can bring the country toward economic self-reliance, peace and stability. Furthermore, Afghanistan has the potential to serve as a transit country and energy exporter in the region; connecting Central Asia and South Asia.

Despite the vast potential for power generation, the country imports more than 75 % of its electricity from Central Asia and the Iran. The urban connection rate is estimated at 35 % and less than 10 % of rural areas have access to electricity.

GTD has the mission to provide solutions that support eco-friendly domestic energy generation and, at the same time, regional cooperation through energy trade. As more than 75 % of the Afghan population live in rural areas, GTD has a specific focus on supporting the decentralized electrification of rural areas in a feasible and sustainable manner.

GTD's core competencies:

Development of power supply concepts (centralized & decentralized) through Renewable Energy.

Initiation, planning & execution of hydro, PV, wind and biogas/biomass energy projects in rural areas

Planning & execution of transmission & distribution projects

Sustainability assessments

Development of human resource capacity with a particular focus on TVET programs

Monitoring & Evaluation of RE projects
